Why Building A Storm Preparedness Plan Matters

While weather around the world is unpredictable, the best way to be ready for a potential weather disaster is to establish a storm preparedness plan. Today, we’ll look at the three components that should be included in your plan and what to do about any damage left behind after the storm has passed.

Build A Storm Preparedness Kit

It’s a great idea to create a supply kit that can sustain every member of your household for up to 10 days. Plan to store one gallon of water per person per day. This can be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Disposable cups, plates, and cutlery will eliminate dirty dishes. Hand sanitizers, self-care items, and household cleaners should also be a part of your preparedness kit.

In setting up your kit, consider shelf-stable non-perishable foods that can be easily prepared without electricity. You should also take special care to prepare for the needs of infants, young children, the elderly, and ill members of your family. If you have pets, be sure to have enough supplies for them as well.

Establish A Storm Communication Plan

In the event of a storm, your usual communication methods may not be available. This can produce a lot of anxiety, but planning ahead can save a nightmare down the road. Determine an out-of-town relative or friend who can be your point of contact. If possible, agree on an out-of-town destination if you have time to evacuate before the storm hits. Store all important documents in safe places to minimize additional problems.

Stay Up-to-Date on Potential Storm Activity

When faced with a possible weather event, local news media and online platforms will provide up-to-date information that can help your family stay safe. If possible, purchase battery-operated radios in the event of a power outage. Battery-operated appliances will help keep you in the know even if the power goes out.
